He created and sent back to the states a number of unsigned oils in the 1950s. Sadly, this particular piece is unsigned. (please see information regarding artist below). Subject: Nude Male / Man – expressionist art study. Artist was a family member as noted. Size: Unstretched canvas; measures approximately 31 x 40 inches. Original oil on canvas produced during artist residency in Mexico. Style: Mid Century Modern Realism with a hint of expressionism. Condition the painting is beautiful but condition is imperfect as shown in photos please note paint loss, cracks, stains, scratches, folds, etc. Please look carefully at the photos using the zoom feature. ABOUT THE ARTIST Sturges Penfield Mower (1922 – 2003). Mower was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and studied at the prestigious California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, CA. He was a contemporary, and life-long friend, of James Weeks whom he met at the School of Fine Arts. He and his three brothers (Calvin, Philip and Lyman) served in various arms of the U. Military forces during WWII. Art was the focus of Sturges’ life and its pursuit led him around the world decade by decade moving from the San Francisco Bay Area to Mexico City (1950s – early 60s); on to Hydra (Greece) (late 1960s through the early 1990s); spending his final years in Florence (Italy). His most prolific work was created during his time on Hydra. His watercolors and sketches were often done in the open air (plein air), as he enjoyed setting up his easel wharf side or in the surrounding hills. His works have not truly been available until recently. Sturges elected not to sell his work during his lifetime; stating that its commercialism might influence him and he preferred to remain true to the art. Sadly, he has passed.
