And was verified as in the style of Murillo from the mid-nineteenth. Although there are many Murillo painting with the Madonna and. John is far less common and of more interest. Very good condition with some minor flaws, one being a small scratch. Above the first child’s head going upward and one may barely make out a. Greek building like a temple in the background see last photo for a close. Up of scratch and the building at the very top of the scratch. Measures approximately 34 1/2 inches high by around 30 1/2 inches. Wide to the outer edges of the frame and the painting itself measures. Late 17th Century Italian Old Master Style Religious Oil on Canvas. Circa late 17th century. An old master style religious study, depicting angels, the sacred heart of Christ, a serpent and dove. Possibly a Holy representation of love, peace and wisdom. The sacred heart of Christ symbol representing Christs love for the whole of humanity, the serpent traditionally believed represent wisdom and the dove of peace (Matthew 10:16 “be ye therefore wise as a serpent and harmless as doves”). There may be other interpretations. Mounted in a carved wooden gilt frame, with polychrome floral decoration in relief. Painting 40cm x 30cm. Frame 55cm x 47cm. Does require some restoration. There is considerable surface wear, some crazing and some losses to the paint (see photos). There are some losses and wear to the gilding on the frame and a loss to the floral decoration lower left. Old worm holes to the back of the frame, as would be expected. Please also refer to the photographs , they form part of the description.
