Adirondack / Hudson River School Antique Impressionistic Oil Painting l c. 1880's
This is a gorgeous medium-large antique impressionistic Hudson River School oil painting created in the 1890’s by a very capable but unknown artist – in the right foreground of the painting, one sees a river running from the right to the left of the landscape & flowing by some enormous boulders rising up from the right bank of the river sharply hundreds of feet above the river bank into the blue sky above the boulders – but, most of the sky was created by the unknown artist using a palette of various shades of gray & white colors to depict a sky suggesting of possible rain storms in the near future. The artist has done a masterful job in showing depth in the painting using his impressionistic style to depict distant boulders & hills in a very vague manner as one would see them when staring off to a distant point of a landscape – using muted & subtle shades of white & gray allows the artist to depict the hills in the mid-background as being far away & shrouded in mist & low clouds – there is a building by the distant hills that was also created with subtle white & gray colors & has miniature dimensions, all of which helps to show range & distance in the painting. The bank of gray-white clouds in the background also create distance by the artist in having them physically meet the top of the hills as they would appear to a viewer if he were actually standing on a hill in the foreground & gazing off towards the distant horizon. This antique impressionistic oil painting has been professionally conserved in the recent past whereby the canvas has been cleaned of over a century of probable cigarette & fireplace smoke (there is NO odor) as well household dirt & dust, & has been re-varnished to protect the surface of the painting as well as to bring out the beautiful original colors that the artist created some 130 (+) years ago – approximately 80 years ago, the canvas was re-backed with another canvas to strengthen & stabilize the original canvas – the painting measures a generous 22″ x 17″ sight size, & is in very good condition for its antique age. The painting is greatly enhanced by its replaced silver painted wooden frame which has a very pleasant “rope turned” design – it is substantial in weight & size as it measures 25″ x 20″ & is a full inch thick – I believe that the frame was added to the painting when the painting was conserved. Arthur Parton (1842-1914) American Hudson River School Oil/Canvas Tonalist NY
This highly atmospheric tonalist landscape of dramatic sky at dawn is very well executed employing a sophisticated knowledge of light, color and perspective. The painting itself is measuring about 18 (46 cm) by 26 (66 cm), and frame is measuring about 20 3/4 (63.5 cm) by 28 3/4 (84 cm). It is signed and dated by the artist in the lower left corner. The painting would be a very sound investment and a great addition to any collection. Along with his younger brother Ernest, Arthur Parton was a central member of the Hudson River School. Born in Hudson, New York, Arthur trained under William Trost Richards at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and began exhibiting in Philadelphia at the age of twenty-two. Richards influence can be seen throughout his early work, which followed the naturalistic mode of the Hudson River School. After spending a year in Europe in 1869, he began to experiment with the style of the Barbizon School, creating pastoral landscapes with softer brushwork and a pronounced attention to tone. As he incorporated aspects of Luminism, Tonalism, and Impressionism into his landscapes, his work came to exemplify the diversity of American art in the second half of the nineteenth century. Parton spent the majority of his career in New York, establishing a studio in the Tenth Street Studio Building and painting throughout the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains. He enjoyed widespread recognition; his painting of the Shenandoah River was published in William Cullen Bryants Picturesque America and he won medals and prizes from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, the American Art Association, and the St. Louis Exposition of 1904. His work is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Newark Museum, the Hudson River Museum, the High Museum of Art, and the Washington Country Museum of Fine Arts. READ ABOUT OUR GALLERY. HUDSON RIVER VALLEY LANDSCAPE PAINTING WITH FARM VIEWS. In oil on canvas, unsigned; 19th century Item # 906IQW05J. A finely painted scene in oil on canvas executed in the manner of the Hudson River Valley school, this vivid landscape depicts a sweeping view of the countryside. The scene is handled expertly with crisp brush strokes bringing to life the complex array of leaves throughout the trees and wealth of grasses lining the foreground. A lone figure sits on the bank of a still river, the calm waters reflecting impressionistic hints of the bank while horses graze in a distant pasture. The painting is housed in an early and likely original frame with partial remnants of an old oxidized label from Wilmurt & Co. Picture Frames of New York. It is a powerful and very finely executed work. 31 5/8″ H x 43 1/2″ W x 4 3/8″ D [frame]; 20″ H x 32 1/4 W [canvas]. Condition Report: Frame has a few spots of loss and areas of regilding. Canvas would benefit from being cleaned as varnish has yellowed slightly and old spots of inpainting have become more obvious to the eye; light craquelure throughout with specks of paint loss in a few spots. Under UV examination, inpainting visible in the sky above the pasture, around the extreme edges of the painting and a few minor areas of touch up in the foliage. Presents nicely but would be more attractive if fully conserved. Welcome to our shop! My name is Andrew Silla and my wife and I own and operate Silla, ltd in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. C1870 Hudson River School Painting With Native Americans By Charles Lanman
For sale is an original oil on canvas painting attributed to the American painter Charles Lanman (1819 – 1895). This painting came from a private estate on the Hudson river in upstate New York at Castleton on the Hudson. This painting is being attributed to Charles Lanman but if you know his work and you will know that this is exactly the scene that he painted numerous times of Native Americans on a rocky ledge looking out against the vast mountainous landscape. He would often just change the juxtaposition of the figures in the painting. He studied under the preeminent Hudson river school master artist Asher B Durand. It is quite rare to see his paintings come up for sale. Most are in major and private collections. This painting appears to have been cut down from its original size. We suspect that the stretcher is probably not original as the painting was most likely slightly larger than this size. However the stretcher is quite old. Unfortunately the signature cannot be detected in the wrapped around canvas as far as we can tell. Please see our close up detailed pictures and you can see the bottom half section and the right side section of this painting (which wraps around the stretcher) showing that the painting was larger at one point. Condition: Cut down and re-stretched. 1 yo 1 1/4 clean tear to right side. Scattered losses but most paint is very good. Easily brought back by some restoration work. The painting is framed however the frame is not original to the painting. Although we are confident that this work is by Charles Lanman, due to it having no visible signature we sell this painting as a 19th-century American landscape painting in the manner of Charles Lanman. Framed – 23 1/2 x 31 1/2. Canvas – 20 x 28. Charles Lanman was born in 1819 in Monroe, Michigan. He was sent north to his Grandfathers in Washington, D. For schooling in 1829. After he left school he worked in New York City. He later worked as a journalist in Michigan, Ohio, and New York City. Lanman ended up in Washington, D. Where he worked at a number of posts in the federal government. An avid outdoorsman Lanman spent his free time exploring the eastern United States, the Mississippi Valley, the Great Lakes and the St. Charles Lanman studied art under Asher B. Durand in New York City. He was made an associate of the National Academy of Design in 1846. Lanman frequently exhibited paintings and sketches from nature in oil. He made sketching trips to every state east of the Rockies. Many of those early sketches were published in The Illustrated London News and in various American magazines. His paintings can be found in the collection of the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D. Charles Lanman died in 1895. William Trost Richards (1833 – 1905). Oil on canvas laid down on board. 9 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches. Signed lower left: W M. The Dayton Art Institute, Dayton, Ohio. Sale, Phillips, New York, New York, January 27, 1983, Lot 113. Howard and Merle Melton. Melton Park Gallery, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Private Collection, New York. Stillwater, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University Museum of Art, February – March, 1998. A native of Philadelphia, William Trost Richards had a fifty-year career as a noted landscape and marine painter whose mature work combined extremely detailed aspects of nature with atmospheric qualities. He was especially innovative for his time because he borrowed informal composition techniques from the Pre-Raphaelites of England, painting lights and colors outdoors as he actually observed them. His formal education ended at age thirteen when he quit school to support his family by working as a commercial draughtsman designing ornamental metal fixtures. He studied painting privately with William Stanley Haseltine and Paul Weber from whom he learned a meticulous graphic technique. He was supported by local persons in Philadelphia who financed a year of study in Europe from 1855 to 1856, and in 1867, he went abroad for a second time. He did numerous pencil drawings and paintings of Italy and Switzerland and much painting along English coasts. As a young painter, Richards came of age during the heyday of Hudson River School artists such as Thomas Cole and Asher Durand. Though he never lost his passion for the romanticized style of this earlier generation, over time Richards landscapes evolved to include more scientific detail and a sense of immediacy. By the 1850s, he had decided that landscape was his favorite subject matter and was especially inspired by American poetry but was much more inspired by American landscape painting, especially that of John Kensett and Frederic Edwin Church. He did a series of brilliant Adirondack landscapes and also coastal landscapes and marine subjects from New Jersey to Maine. The latter part of his career, he was firmly established as a coastal and marine painter, ever fascinated by the tumultuous phenomenon of water hitting rocks and beach. He was known to spend hours studying his scenes, astutely observing changes in light and color, carefully noting the fluid reactions in crashing waves. His works on paper–watercolor and pencil drawings–were some of his earliest and most important contributions, and hundreds of them survive in spite of an 1854 studio fire. Having been working in oil for some time, he began working in watercolor in the late 1860s, which was linked to his growing interest in the seashore. In 1878, Richards traveled to Great Britain, where he hoped to study the turbulent and wild Atlantic seacoast. This was the first of eight trips the artist would make over the next dozen years, as Richards became consumed with Englands coastal topography. Among his most favored sites were the cliffs along the Cornish coast. The item “WILLIAM TROST RICHARDS Cornish Coast, Hudson River School, Museum Provenance” is in sale since Monday, March 5, 2018.
