OLD MASTER Oil Painting VISION OF SAINT JEROME Antique Panel 17 C. ITALIAN

A very fine Old Master oil on canvas, I believe it depicts the vision of St. Jerome in the Syrian wilderness. I acquired it in the 1980s in Paris, but I suspect it is of Italian origins. Although painted on canvas, it has been mounted, probably in the 19th century, on a fine old mahogany panel that has been strengthened against warping with oak cross cleats, although it still has acquired a slight bow to the panel. Late 17th Century Italian Old Master Style Religious Oil on Canvas. Circa late 17th century. An old master style religious study, depicting angels, the sacred heart of Christ, a serpent and dove. Possibly a Holy representation of love, peace and wisdom. The sacred heart of Christ symbol representing Christs love for the whole of humanity, the serpent traditionally believed represent wisdom and the dove of peace (Matthew 10:16 “be ye therefore wise as a serpent and harmless as doves”). There may be other interpretations. Mounted in a carved wooden gilt frame, with polychrome floral decoration in relief. Painting 40cm x 30cm. Frame 55cm x 47cm. Does require some restoration. There is considerable surface wear, some crazing and some losses to the paint (see photos). There are some losses and wear to the gilding on the frame and a loss to the floral decoration lower left. Old worm holes to the back of the frame, as would be expected. Please also refer to the photographs , they form part of the description.
