This listing is for the Huge Antique 18th C. Portrait of a Noble Lady in a Courtyard pictured above. A beautiful, stately English School portrait of a noble lady in a courtyard, dating to the first half of the 18th century. This wonderful portrait depicts a young lady in an elaborate, vivid red dress with white lace accents. She carefully holds up her dress in her left hand and gestures with her right. She stands in an open courtyard with a short staircase visible in the background, which also includes numerous clusters of trees. The work is an oil on canvas and appears to be unsigned. It is housed in a wood frame. There is an older label from the 20th century on the reverse that is inscribed Mrs Bardsley, which may refer to either the sitter or a previous owner. Brown and Merry – Tring, UK (1994). Private Collection – PA. 47.5 inches tall by 39.875 inches wide (painting). 50.75 inches tall by 43.5 inches wide (frame). Very Interesting French Oil On Canvas Portrait Painting Of A Noble Lady 1650
A Very Interesting Mid 17th Century French Portrait of a Noble Lady Oil on Canvas. A Fine’Manor House’ portrait – Catherine de la Rochefoucauld (1620 – 1691). This is a very finely executed portrait of a French noble lady who we know to be the sister of Francois VI, Duc de la Rochefoucauld, Prince de Marcillac. 1613 – 1680 and daughter of Francois V (1588 – 1650). Extremely well executed capturing the lady’s grief but also her aristocratic poise and bearing which she has not allowed to be diminished even under the mournful circumstances of her father’s death.. She wears the ubiquitous black mourning gown and headdress of the time which has been finely detailed by the artist – who is unknown to us. I have carried out a good deal of research into this painting and the only date which matches the lady’s age – her appearance here – (about age 30) and finding her wearing black mourning garb is 1650 – the death of her father. So in my view this work can be acccurately dated to 1650…. And the style of painting fits perfectly to that period. No other family member died close to that date and this is certainly not a painting showing her at age 71 when her husband died! Of more interest actually is the life of her brother Francois VI – a very good read – a man of many many talents – a famous aristocratic author in Paris and someone who fell out spectacularly with Cardinal Richelieu…… Please look him up on Wikipedia if you are interested – a remarkable man! And here we have a remarkable work… In my view his sister mourning the death of their father in 1650. Housed in a super ebonised and gilt moulded frame which is later and detailed with a plaque inscribed with the lady’s title. In good order for over 370 years of age there is stabilised craquleure present and corner repair where probably in the mid 18th century the owners (possibly her descendents) decided to house her in what was then a fashionable oval frame.. Since then (but a long time ago) she has been reinstated in her correct shape of frame and the corners very expertly added…… All a part of the history of the work. Ready to hang (as are ALL my paintings). Any paler areas you may see are glare from light striking the varnish and are not weaker parts of the painting. A superior and highly decorative portrait painting – 370 years old – keenly recommended. Measurements including the frame 34.5″ x 28.25″. You will clearly be shown the entire work of art – front and back – and details of all of it’s good and’bad’ points. I will not be vague about age or provenance or any later work carried out. ALL of my paintings are’ready to hang’ and I will NEVER expect you to find a frame or carry out any restoration work yourself – this is MY job as a professional fine art dealer. I hope you will find something you like – please message me with questions – You will find me accommodating and friendly. Many thanks and best wishes. This is the exact cost to me. Some larger paintings can require a courier who will personally deliver to you… This may take a little longer to arrive. For international carriage costs please message me.
