He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français where he received the Hors concours medal in 1909: at the age of 26, he began a career as a portrait painter. He will always work in front of a model, or on the motif, if it is landscapes or still lifes. He is a contemplative, amazed at all the forms of Beauty that nature conceals, and that he strives to convey in his paintings with veracity. In 1914, he was mobilized as an infantryman and wounded at the Battle of the Marne. Reformed after a year in hospital, impressed by the war scenes, he designed them for the newspapers of the time.
