This beautiful vintage painting was completed on canvas and signed by the artist on the lower right A. Alex Dzigurski, American Marines and Landscapes. The artist does a wonderful job of capturing nature’s majestic beauty in. A luminous glow that is diffused throughout the whole painting. It is an excellent example of the artist’s work. It is in very good vintage condition. Under a black light it shows no signs of paint loss, in-painting or repair. Unframed the painting measures 24″ in height x 36″ wide and together with the vintage gesso and wooden frame it measures 36″ x 42″. The handsome vintage frame has a depth of 1 1/2 and it is also in very good vintage condition. As for the artist, Alexander Dzigurski is known for his seascapes, landscapes and portraits and is associated with the art of California. Alex was born in the farming community of Backa, located in Stari Becej, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The son of a wheat farmer, he was one of four siblings. Alexander’s father considered his son’s artistic desires an unproductive pursuit, however, his mother was most interested in her son’s talent, and understood her son’s wishes to extend his abilities beyond the farm. With the assistance of the Serbian Church, he went to Belgrade, where he lived at. Monastery and attended the School of Art. He painted portraits for private families and did restorations of old iconostases as means of support. After graduating at age 18 in 1929, he continued his studies at Munich’s Academy of Art. Then, for two years he volunteered in the King’s Navy (Kingdom of Yugoslavia) beginning in 1939. His experiences provided his first works of his sea paintings. After his military period, he married his high school sweetheart. A daughter was born in 1933 and he soon opened “Zograf”, his first studio. In 1941, Dzigurski was activated into the Yogoslav army communications division. Several weeks later, Hitler’s army took most of his unit prisoner. Dzigurski managed to escape. Yugoslavia continued to be dissolved by the Germans, thus forcing Dzigurski to relinquish his succesful studio and depart for Italy. In 1949, the Dzigurski’s departed Naples, Italy and arrived in New York Harbor aboard the Marine Jumper. His former Yugoslav professor introduced the family into the Serbian Orhodox Church community. Familiar with Alexader’s work, the Bishop had him paint icons (traditionally Byzantine) for a small memorial chapel in Pennsylvania. He would later be commissioned to paint the alters and interiors of nine Serbian Orthodox churches between 1951 and 1960. His beautiful works were not signed, remaining anonymous like most of the orthodox ecclesiastical painters before him. Dzigurski viewed his art as a sacred craft, excluding the intervention of human inventions. By about 1952, Alexander settled his family in California and began to paint seriously, particularly along the coastlines of northern California and Oregon. In 1968, a period of depression followed the death of his wife, and he lost interest in life and painting. While recovering from a broken arm, Dzigurski became fond of, and married his nurse. With renewed optimism and the birth of his son, Alexander Jr. He vigorously began painting again. His seascapes and landscapes are most realistic and have broad appeal. His extensive travelling in the United States can be seen in his works from the Smoky Mountains, the Grand Tetons, Mt. Shasta, the Rockies, Glacier National Park, New England and other coastal communities. Was a member of the Artists of America Association and exhibited his paintings at the Charles Russel Museum in Great Falls, Montana and with the Artists of America Denver, Colorado Rotary Club. His paintings can be found in may private and public institutions like the Franklin Mint Museum of American Art in Pennsylvania, the Republic Bank of Dallas, The Michagan Bank of Chicago, Illinois, the Ravenswood Bank of Chicago to name a few. Having become one of America’s well-known artists, Alexander Dzigurski passed away in 1995. This work to be an original Alexander Dzigurski painting. I described the painting’s condition accurately. For your consideration is a vintage mid-century modernist oil painting of the famed basilica in Montmartre, Paris, France. This original painting was completed on canvas and signed by the artist on the lower left, Hugo Casar. The charming snow covered winter painting was not dated. I have viewed a lot of Hugo’s paintings and, in my opinion. This particular painting’s subject matter, color, composition and quality, make this one of his very best works! As for the artist, Hugo Casar was born in Danzig, Germany in 1911. He studied in the cities of Konigsberg, Berlin and Paris. After that he came to. Hugo was known for his modernist landscapes, nautical. Clowns and in particular, children. A very unique style to paint them, creating sort of a fantasy around them. Has drawn much attention and excellent reviews from art critics. His modernist style is. His, and the brilliant colors which he used have a certain allure to them. Hugo’s paintings have been exhibited in many fine art galleries around the world and they are in many private collections both in the United States and abroad. Hugo Cesar passed away in his birth country of Germany in 1975. The painting is in overall very good condition. Under a black light it shows no signs of paint loss, in-painting or repair. It does show some faint. Craquelure from the paint settling but it is all firmly intact. In my opinion, you do not notice it all. From a normal viewing distance. I tend to not consider this a blemish, rather a testament to its honest history. Unframed the painting measures 19 7/8″ in height x 23 7/8″ wide and together with the vintage gold wooden frame it measures 25 1/2″ x 29 1/2″. The handsome vintage frame has a depth of 2 and is in overall good condition with some very minor chipping and surface abrasions consistent with its age. Modernist painting of Montmartre is a gem of a painting; it will make for a welcome addition to any savvy art connoisseur’s collection. Judge for yourself from all the detailed images provided. From an upscale South Florida estate, this is an original antique oil painting by well-listed artist William Constable Adam. Excerpted from Wikipedia: William Constable Adam (29 August 1846 17 October 1931) was an English-born oil and watercolour painter of Scottish ancestry who spent the last 33 years of his life in California, United States. Adam was born just south of his paternal Scotland in Tweedmouth on the outskirts of Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1846. After completing grammar school, he began evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art. At the age of 19 he traveled to South America, studied art in Buenos Aires, worked as a broker in Montevideo, and later published a serialized travelogue of his adventures. On his return to Scotland (early 1870s) he continued his art training under Robert Greenlees and Robert Brydall, and was an early member of the Glasgow Art Club. After travels in north Africa and advanced training in Paris under Auguste-Joseph Delécluse he exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. William Adam migrated to the United States in 1893-94, settled in Massachusetts, joined the Boston Art Club, and was co-founder and president of the Lowell Art Club. In 1898-99 he relocated to California and worked as an accountant for a mining company before moving permanently to the Monterey Peninsula. By 1901 he resided in the Methodist colony of Pacific Grove, California, began to display his paintings locally, and received an invitation to exhibit in San Francisco, California at the prestigious W. After changing addresses twice he occupied in 1906 the Pacific Grove home at 450 Central Avenue. Because he taught art class in Pacific Grove, he was known affectionately as The Professor. He exhibited at a variety of venues, including the Berkley Art Association (Berkeley, California), the Art Gallery at the luxury Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California, and many private galleries in San Francisco. He spent much of his time at the nearby art colony of Carmel-by-the-Sea where he exhibited at the Arts and Crafts Club and the Carmel Art Association between 1906 and 1927. Especially popular with tourists were his (often repeated) renderings of the local Spanish architecture, lush gardens and charming scenes along the Pacific Coast. For competitive exhibitions he executed highly original landscapes which employed the bold dramatic brushwork of the French Impressionists. William Adam died in Pacific Grove on 17 October 1931. His Central Avenue address has been restored by the local Heritage Society. I photographed this painting under different lighting conditions. The first two pictures are under indirect lighting, and show the painting fairly well. The rest of the pictures are with direct lighting, which shows the richness of the paint and colors better, but also makes for a lot of white spots – THOSE are just reflections of the bright photo lights on the texture of the paint. Here we see a dirt path leading through the open gate of a green picket fence, into a garden that appears to be growing almost wild, with a profuse covering of flowers. Almost hidden is the wall of a building, perhaps the artist’s own Pacific Grove cottage. Frame Size = 17-1/4″ H x 14-3/4″ W Stretched Canvas Size = 14-1/4″ H x 11″ W Painting is signed at the bottom: “Wm Adam” There are also a couple of notes on the back… Died in Pacific Gr. PAINTING IN GOOD CONDITION. DETAIL AND COLOR OF EACH PORTION, ALL REVEALS THE SKILLFUL CREATION ARTWORK. SIZE 24 X 20 INCH FRAME 30 X 26 INCH. Maurice Braun was born on October 1, 1877 in Nagy Bittse, which then, was within the boundaries of Hungary and now is a resort in Czechoslovakia. Hungarian by birth, at the age of four Maurice and the Braun family migrated to the United States and settled in New York City. As a young man Maurice Braun rejected a career as a jeweler and instead opted to become a painter. From 1897 to 1900 his professional studies took him to the National Academy of Fine Arts studying in the French academic tradition under Francis C. Maynard and Edgar M. Following his training at the Academy, in 1901 Braun studied for one year with the famous American painter William Merritt Chase. After having been established in New York as a figure and portrait painter, Braun left for California in 1909 to escape the influence of his fellow artists. California’s incredible landscape proved to be inspirational. Reveling in the color and forms of the region, with a strong sense of composition, he masterfully balanced the challenges of California’s intense light and color. His landscapes reflect a deep respect and appreciation for nature. Captivated by San Diego and southern California throughout his career, Braun became an integral figure of the Southern California landscape school along with his contemporaries Charles Reiffel, Charles A. Fries, Leon Bonnet and Elliot Torrey. He was considered by many to be San Diego’s most famous of early painters. He maintained studios in San Diego, California and Old Lyme, Connecticut. Maurice Braun won the Hallgarten Prize, National Academy of Design in 1900 and later the Gold Medal at the Panama-California Exposition, San Diego in 1915,1916. His paintings can be found in the Houston Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Laguna Beach Museum of Art and the San Diego Museum of Art. Maurice Braun died in his beloved city, San Diego, on November 7, 1941.
