Arthur Parton (1842-1914) American Hudson River School Oil/Canvas Tonalist NY
This highly atmospheric tonalist landscape of dramatic sky at dawn is very well executed employing a sophisticated knowledge of light, color and perspective. The painting itself is measuring about 18 (46 cm) by 26 (66 cm), and frame is measuring about 20 3/4 (63.5 cm) by 28 3/4 (84 cm). It is signed and dated by the artist in the lower left corner. The painting would be a very sound investment and a great addition to any collection. Along with his younger brother Ernest, Arthur Parton was a central member of the Hudson River School. Born in Hudson, New York, Arthur trained under William Trost Richards at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and began exhibiting in Philadelphia at the age of twenty-two. Richards influence can be seen throughout his early work, which followed the naturalistic mode of the Hudson River School. After spending a year in Europe in 1869, he began to experiment with the style of the Barbizon School, creating pastoral landscapes with softer brushwork and a pronounced attention to tone. As he incorporated aspects of Luminism, Tonalism, and Impressionism into his landscapes, his work came to exemplify the diversity of American art in the second half of the nineteenth century. Parton spent the majority of his career in New York, establishing a studio in the Tenth Street Studio Building and painting throughout the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains. He enjoyed widespread recognition; his painting of the Shenandoah River was published in William Cullen Bryants Picturesque America and he won medals and prizes from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, the American Art Association, and the St. Louis Exposition of 1904. His work is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Newark Museum, the Hudson River Museum, the High Museum of Art, and the Washington Country Museum of Fine Arts. A must have for the avid Dutch Art collector! Created while residing at the Hague, Maris became a strong landscape painter painting rivers and landscapes with mills and towpaths. His stroke became broader and larger and his use of color became more subdued and directed towards portraying the atmospheric depiction of clouds. His style of painting has been compared to the seventeenth-century painters Jan Van Goyen, Jacob Van Ruisdael and Johannes Vermeer. Titled: “On The Maas”. Measurements: 13.5″ x 17.5″ – Total Framed 19.5″ x 24″. Condition: Good overall condition considering age, no tears or flaking of paint, some crazing. This cityscape is very well executed employing a sophisticated knowledge of light, color and perspective. This painting would be a very sound investment and a great addition to any collection. Helen de Silaghi SIRAG. Helen de Silaghi SIRAG immigrated to Canada from Romania in 1949 and became a long-time resident of Burlington, Ontario. As a child, she was identified as a prodigy, giving her first gallery showing in Bucharest at the age of 11. In Canada she was a cosmopolitan force, entertaining a stream of politicians, athletes, artists, diplomats, journalists and gangsters at her home. She was known for her flamboyance, and her ouevre’s subject matter spanned all the way from scenes of serene country life to fantastical renderings of distant worlds and alien species. At that time, this “cosmic art” was somewhat controversial, particularly since de Silaghi claimed that she had personally viewed these scenes during personal travels through space and time. De Silaghi’s fame was extensive enough that her life was occasionally the subject of exposition in the National Enquirer and other tabloids. De Silaghi passed away in 2008, at the age of 88.
