Biography from the Archives of askART. Berthe Morisot was born at Bourges, France on January 14, 1841. She grew up in a bourgeois family which, in a break from usual practice, encouraged Berthe and her sister, Edme, in their painting. She first studied with Guichard, a follower of Ingres, but in 1862 she made the acquaintance of Corot, and went over to his disciple Oudinot. Her next great influence was Manet, and it was under his guidance that she took up figure-painting as well as landscapes, exhibiting both kinds of work at the Salons from 1870 on. As a young woman, she joined the avant-garde and showed works at the impressionist exhibits that challenged the official Salon; her earlier paintings are lovely examples of what might be called mainstream impressionism. In 1874 Morisot married Manet’s brother Eugene, about whom very little is known. They had a daughter, Julie. Morisot began to paint remarkably challenging pictures, and her fellow artists began to admire her more and more. Unfortunately she was not thought by everyone to be a painter of the first rank. At first she had more reputation as a hostess than an artist, entertaining such men of talent as Degas, Renoir, Pissaro, Manet and the poet, Mallarme. She often posed for Manet, being his model for some of his well-known works. She died in March of 1895. Written and submitted by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California. Sources include: Mark Stevens in Newsweek , September 28, 1987 Masterpieces of Art : Catalogue of the New York World’s Fair 1940. Biography from Modern Art Dealers. Berthe Morisot was born at Bourges, France in 1841. She was the daughter of a successful and wealthy government official who himself was an enthusiastic amateur painter and supporter of the arts. Being part of a family of wealth and culture, she received the conventional lessons in drawing and painting and eventually decided to make a career of these pursuits. A French painter and printmaker, she was the first woman to join the circle of the French impressionist painters. She exhibited in most of their shows and despite the protests of friends and family she continued to participate in their struggle for recognition. By age 20, she had befriended Camille Corot, the important landscape painter of the Barbizon school. Corot started tutoring Berthe and her sister Edma in their painting and also introduced them to other artists and teachers. She worked under his guidance from 1862 to 1868. She also experimented with seascapes, but being a leading exponent of Impressionism she painted mainly what she saw in her immediate, everyday life. As a woman securely in the “haute bourgeoisie” that constituted domestic interiors, holiday spots, other women and children. Berthe Morisot died on March 2, 1895 in Paris and was interred in the Cimetière de Passy. William Trost Richards (1833 – 1905). Oil on canvas laid down on board. 9 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches. Signed lower left: W M. The Dayton Art Institute, Dayton, Ohio. Sale, Phillips, New York, New York, January 27, 1983, Lot 113. Howard and Merle Melton. Melton Park Gallery, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Private Collection, New York. Stillwater, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University Museum of Art, February – March, 1998. A native of Philadelphia, William Trost Richards had a fifty-year career as a noted landscape and marine painter whose mature work combined extremely detailed aspects of nature with atmospheric qualities. He was especially innovative for his time because he borrowed informal composition techniques from the Pre-Raphaelites of England, painting lights and colors outdoors as he actually observed them. His formal education ended at age thirteen when he quit school to support his family by working as a commercial draughtsman designing ornamental metal fixtures. He studied painting privately with William Stanley Haseltine and Paul Weber from whom he learned a meticulous graphic technique. He was supported by local persons in Philadelphia who financed a year of study in Europe from 1855 to 1856, and in 1867, he went abroad for a second time. He did numerous pencil drawings and paintings of Italy and Switzerland and much painting along English coasts. As a young painter, Richards came of age during the heyday of Hudson River School artists such as Thomas Cole and Asher Durand. Though he never lost his passion for the romanticized style of this earlier generation, over time Richards landscapes evolved to include more scientific detail and a sense of immediacy. By the 1850s, he had decided that landscape was his favorite subject matter and was especially inspired by American poetry but was much more inspired by American landscape painting, especially that of John Kensett and Frederic Edwin Church. He did a series of brilliant Adirondack landscapes and also coastal landscapes and marine subjects from New Jersey to Maine. The latter part of his career, he was firmly established as a coastal and marine painter, ever fascinated by the tumultuous phenomenon of water hitting rocks and beach. He was known to spend hours studying his scenes, astutely observing changes in light and color, carefully noting the fluid reactions in crashing waves. His works on paper–watercolor and pencil drawings–were some of his earliest and most important contributions, and hundreds of them survive in spite of an 1854 studio fire. Having been working in oil for some time, he began working in watercolor in the late 1860s, which was linked to his growing interest in the seashore. In 1878, Richards traveled to Great Britain, where he hoped to study the turbulent and wild Atlantic seacoast. This was the first of eight trips the artist would make over the next dozen years, as Richards became consumed with Englands coastal topography. Among his most favored sites were the cliffs along the Cornish coast. The item “WILLIAM TROST RICHARDS Cornish Coast, Hudson River School, Museum Provenance” is in sale since Monday, March 5, 2018. A very rare Original OIL PAINTING by Thomas Kinkade. The painting depicts a beautiful scene from Yosemite National Park. It was painted in 1989. Plein air (open air) work, done on location at Yosemite. Thom was drawn to Yosemite. He painted there a number of times. This may well be a study for his published work by the same name. The final photo posted is of the Published final rendition of Yosemite Meadows that our plein air work inspired. Thom usually started with a sketch, then did an onsite plein air work and finally a studio work that was published for sale. Kinkade wrote the following words about painting at Yosemite: There are few places on Earth that are more awe-inspiring than Yosemite Valley nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Home of the undisputed King of the valley is “El Capitan”, an exposed rock face of unmatched size that serves as silent sentinel presiding over the majesty of Yosemite’s other natural wonders. You hear Him in the rustle of the wind in the trees… Taste, smell and feel Him in the fragrance of flowers and in the sweet air and water found in the cathedral of the wild. As an artist, Kinkade is famous for the luminescent light that he demonstrated in his paintings of cottages, churches, and gardens. However, the art world is now considering his early work of the American West and his landscapes as some of his best and most. This beautiful painting is an masterpiece and represents great care and attention by the artist, Thomas Kinkade. Retail Kinkade affiliated galleries would be asking several times what we are for this piece. This is your chance to add an authentic original Kinkade painting to your collection. We accept credit cards through Pay Pal or a cashier’s check. Personal checks also accepted but require time to clear the bank. Was born in 1958 and grew up in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains. From the age of four, his calling as an artist was evident, and by 16 he was an accomplished painter in oil under the apprenticeship of the well-known artist Glen Wessels. After studies at the University of California at Berkeley, and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, Kinkade began work for the motion picture industry at age 22. He personally created over 600 background paintings for the animated feature film, Fire and Ice. This intensive period of work for the movie business may well have been the genesis of Kinkade’s mastery of pictorial lighting effects. In 1983, Thomas Kinkade left the film industry to pursue his vision as painter of light-filled landscapes. Since then his career has been documented in feature articles and/or editorial exposure in such well-known magazines Architectural Digest, American Artist, Collector’s Mart Magazine, Collector Editions, Lively Arts and Leisure, Worldwide Challenge, US Art, Southwest Art, and Weekend. He is a regular guest on radio talk shows and and has made a guest appearance on ABC’s popular network show, “Home”, starring Gary Collins. Kinkade’s impressive list of honors includes: two Certificates of Merit from the New York Society of Illustrators, two Founder’s Awards from the National Parks Academy for the Arts (the first artist ever to receive this award twice), a two-man show at the C. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana, over 10 one-man shows, and countless personal appearances. Furthermore, Kinkade was chosen as the official artist for the 1989 National Park’s Collector’s Print and the 1990 Commemorative Press Collector’s Print honoring Rotary International. Also in 1991 he won “Plate of the Show” in Southbend, Best New Artist of The Year for NALED in 1992, Collector “Award of Excellence” in 1993 and Lithograph of the year for NALED was named second runner-up for Lithograph of the year for NALED and first runner-up for Artist of the Year. He was also chosen to be the official artist for the lighting of the National Christmas Tree at the White House and was the appointed artist for the Olympics. Mr Kinkade died on April 7, 2012. YOUSAF KARSH PABLO PICASO 1954 S. (H x W): 24×30 Inch. New York Private Collection, Lovisco Gallery Label Verso. Biography from the Archives of askART. Following is the AskART Glossary definition of Highwaymen, which included Alfred Hair. A group of young African-American landscape and skyscape painters, these artists painted their way out of the despair awaiting them as workers in Florida citrus groves and packing houses of the 1950s. Original members were James Gibson, Alfred Hair, Harold Newton and Livingston Roberts. The only female member was Mary Ann Carroll. The Highwaymen created hybrid versions of his style, and their work is sometimes characterized as motel art. In succeeding decades, however, Highwaymen paintings were consigned to attics and garage sales. Their work has been rediscovered in the mid 1990’s, and today is recognized as the work of American folk artists. Painting with Poinciana and 3 Black Figures. Poinciana Tree by the River.
