MID-CENTURY Modern CALIFORNIA ABSTRACT 1950s Bridge OIL PAINTING

This painting is signed by the artist on the reverse along with his Sacramento address. It is in it’s original period hardwood frame and liner. Good sized, the painting measures 18 x 24 inches, with frame it is 19 1/2 x 25 1/2 inches. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition, the frame does not bow in at center, this is a camera lens illusion. He had numerous one-man exhibits and participated in many other open exhibits. After settling in Utah, he was very active in the Ogden area arts for many years, teaching adjunct classes for Weber State and Utah State Universities. His work has been featured and published in several publications, notably “Artists of Utah” and in 1966, “La Revue Modern” in Paris. They are from the house of De Lannoy. The coronet is one of an hereditary knight. Interesting as the De Lannoys of Belgium are all Counts. Makes me think these might be French De Lannoys or perhaps De Lannoys that emigrated to the U. And retained the knight status. Wear and imperfections commensurate with age and use. This painting was given to me in the early 1980s for my bedroom wall when I was in high school. At furniture stores and mid-range department stores. There actually was no individual artist “Letterman”; that’s just how they were signed. I may be a bit biased, but I think this one is particularly good. It’s obviously inspired by the Hungarian-French artist Victor Vasarely, a pioneer of Op Art. It’s a wonderful and fairly rare vintage piece that captures the spirit of its time with its supergraphic geometry and 1970s earth tones. I’ve enjoyed it and I’d like someone new to appreciate it. This great landscape by Paul Grimm is in excellent shape. The frame is original and could use a bit of restoration. The painting itself has never been cleaned or restored but has been displayed in a non smoking environment out of direct sun. Size of canvas is a 20 x 24. My mother owned an art gallery in California for a short time in the late 60’s and has had this since that time. Grimm (1891- 1974): A prolific painter who was highly acclaimed for his colorful landscapes. At the age of 18 Grimm. Won a scholarship to study at the Dusseldorf Royal Academy in Germany. After he left the prestigious institution, Grimm moved back to the United States and settled in Hollywood where he would paint movie backdrops for several years. He would spend the rest of his life as a resident in California, keeping a studio in Palm Springs where Dwight D. Eisenhower often used to visit his friend. Today an throughout his career, Grimm’s works have been published in many esteemed art publications and exhibited in museums across the country for the enjoyment of collectors and critics.
