Eichholtz did not sign many of his works and this piece is unsigned. It is the spectacular lace collar that leads me to think he is the artist. The picture with frame is 25″ across and 30″ in height. There are two small specs of paint missing to the upper right but the back of the canvas is solid. The age is obvious by the back of the painting and it has not been restored, was very well protected all of these years. My guess is that it was painted in the first half of the 19th century by a master portrait artist who knew his craft well. Nice use of lighting on the face, with the left shoulder of the composition covered by a brilliant red velveteen shawl, a contrast to the staid nature of the subject.
