This painting, though not signed, is unmistakably a typical work of the very well known English painter of the early 19th century William Etty (1787 York – 1849 ibidem). The artist absolves his studies under Thomas Lawrence at the Royal Academy in London, where from 1812 on he exhibits his works annually. Two study travels take him to Italy in 1816 and 1822-23. Back in London in 1824 he will take a large atelier becoming a great demanded artist and associate member of the Royal Academy. In 1828 the Academy elects him as a full member. Ettys oeuvre celebrate the beauty of a nude woman. He influenced Pre-raphaelites as well as Delacroix, who personally knew him.
