French Antique Old Master Painting Attrib. Jacques Antoine Vallin, 18th Century

Dreamy oil on canvas of nymphs drinking wine and frolicking in the forest, attributed to Jacques Antoine Vallin, 18th century. There is no apparent signature on the painting that we can see, just the attribution plaque which has been mounted onto the frame at some point. Condition is good despite obvious craquelure and fading in areas where we can see the fibers of the canvas through the paint. We have photographed a couple of small nicks to the frame. One has to be up very close to see these signs of wear; from a distance, the overall effect is magical, especially with that heavenly lighting shining down through the trees. Measures 20 x 17 inches. As the items that we sell are often fragile and irreplaceable, great care is taken during packaging to ensure their safe transit and arrival. Items must be in the same condition as when received. (pictures do not do this piece justice) antique oil painting on canvas, probably dates around the 1780’s-90’s could be slightly earlier, European portrait of a upper class gentleman. We examined the piece for a signature, and could not seem to locate one, paint has darkened over the years, so it’s hard to see. The condition of the painting is very nice for it’s age, no major damage that we can see, was well taken care of. Painting is tightly stretched, possibly re-lined, and has a nice thick coat of varnish. This is another piece we acquired from a friend of ours, who has an amazing private collection of art and antiques and sometimes sales a few of his pieces once in a while, this piece being one of them, and a few others too be listed soon. The painting is after Titian and appears to be unsigned. The painting may have been signed but the typical spot for a signature would be lower left of right, but there is a lot of paint loss in those areas. The painting measures 33-1/2″ x 29″ and looks to be on the original strainer. In this case the destination was Youngstown, Ohio, which does have the world famous Butler Institute of Art. There are several areas of damage that were repaired many years ago, the worst being the area on Judith’s neck. There is also paint loss, mostly with the color black, which seemed to have suffered the worst. I believe the painting is from the 18th century judging from the condition of the canvas and the construction of the strainer.
