Stéphane Cara – The Cottage – Circa 1950 Luminous oil on canvas painting representing a thatch cottage, probably from the region of Brittany (France). Signed CARA in the lower right corner. The picture is set in its original Montparnasse-style frame. Stéphane Gilbert Fernand Caracotchian, known as Stéphane Cara, is a French post-Impressionist painter. Of Armenian origin, he was born in Châtenois (Alsace) on July 3, 1901. The son of a prestigious doctor, his family moved to Paris in 1919. He worked for many years as a wine merchant and as an agent for the “Société Anonyme fluviale Trans-Cam” in Bordeaux, before dedicating himself fully to painting. He exhibited several landscapes at the Salon des Indépendants Bordelais in 1947. He was the author of a book entitled (in French) “Painting in a Nutshell: or How to Judge a Painting” published in 1959. His sister Anita was the first woman oceanographer in the world. Stéphane Cara died in Nice (Provence) on May 16, 1962, at the age of 60. Source: Archives de France. Signed and dated in lower right corner. Medium: Oil on wood panel. Condition: Very good condition. MID-CENTURY Modern CALIFORNIA ABSTRACT 1950s Bridge OIL PAINTING

This painting is signed by the artist on the reverse along with his Sacramento address. It is in it’s original period hardwood frame and liner. Good sized, the painting measures 18 x 24 inches, with frame it is 19 1/2 x 25 1/2 inches. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition, the frame does not bow in at center, this is a camera lens illusion. He had numerous one-man exhibits and participated in many other open exhibits. After settling in Utah, he was very active in the Ogden area arts for many years, teaching adjunct classes for Weber State and Utah State Universities. His work has been featured and published in several publications, notably “Artists of Utah” and in 1966, “La Revue Modern” in Paris.
