Early 20th C Tonalist Oil Painting of a Harbor
This painting is an oil on canvas depiction of a harbor. The full moon has broken through the clouds filtering the light over the horizon. The anchored ships and structures provide silhouettes against the filtered moonlight creating a handsome tonal composition. The canvas would seem to be from the first quarter of the 20th c and is unsigned. The canvas measures 8 by 10 to sight and 14 by 16 in the gilt, wood, composition cove frame. The paint surface is in a particularly good and stable condition. The frame shows some minor losses and some slight areas of discoloration to the inner liner which are consistent with age and use. Oil on canvas in very good condition. Signed bottom Joron , ca 1920. Maurice Joron, born in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, January 18, 1883 and died in Vaucresson, October 4, 1937, is a French painter. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français where he received the Hors concours medal in 1909: at the age of 26, he began a career as a portrait painter. He will always work in front of a model, or on the motif, if it is landscapes or still lifes. He is a contemplative, amazed at all the forms of Beauty that nature conceals, and that he strives to convey in his paintings with veracity. In 1914, he was mobilized as an infantryman and wounded at the Battle of the Marne. Reformed after a year in hospital, impressed by the war scenes, he designed them for the newspapers of the time.
