For sale is an original oil on canvas painting attributed to the American painter Charles Lanman (1819 – 1895). This painting came from a private estate on the Hudson river in upstate New York at Castleton on the Hudson. This painting is being attributed to Charles Lanman but if you know his work and you will know that this is exactly the scene that he painted numerous times of Native Americans on a rocky ledge looking out against the vast mountainous landscape. He would often just change the juxtaposition of the figures in the painting. He studied under the preeminent Hudson river school master artist Asher B Durand. It is quite rare to see his paintings come up for sale. Most are in major and private collections. This painting appears to have been cut down from its original size. We suspect that the stretcher is probably not original as the painting was most likely slightly larger than this size. However the stretcher is quite old. Unfortunately the signature cannot be detected in the wrapped around canvas as far as we can tell. Please see our close up detailed pictures and you can see the bottom half section and the right side section of this painting (which wraps around the stretcher) showing that the painting was larger at one point. Condition: Cut down and re-stretched. 1 yo 1 1/4 clean tear to right side. Scattered losses but most paint is very good. Easily brought back by some restoration work. The painting is framed however the frame is not original to the painting. Although we are confident that this work is by Charles Lanman, due to it having no visible signature we sell this painting as a 19th-century American landscape painting in the manner of Charles Lanman. Framed – 23 1/2 x 31 1/2. Canvas – 20 x 28. Charles Lanman was born in 1819 in Monroe, Michigan. He was sent north to his Grandfathers in Washington, D. For schooling in 1829. Where he worked at a number of posts in the federal government. An avid outdoorsman Lanman spent his free time exploring the eastern United States, the Mississippi Valley, the Great Lakes and the St. Charles Lanman studied art under Asher B.
