Stéphane Cara – The Cottage – Circa 1950 Luminous oil on canvas painting representing a thatch cottage, probably from the region of Brittany (France). Signed CARA in the lower right corner. The picture is set in its original Montparnasse-style frame. Stéphane Gilbert Fernand Caracotchian, known as Stéphane Cara, is a French post-Impressionist painter. Of Armenian origin, he was born in Châtenois (Alsace) on July 3, 1901. The son of a prestigious doctor, his family moved to Paris in 1919. He worked for many years as a wine merchant and as an agent for the “Société Anonyme fluviale Trans-Cam” in Bordeaux, before dedicating himself fully to painting. He exhibited several landscapes at the Salon des Indépendants Bordelais in 1947. He was the author of a book entitled (in French) “Painting in a Nutshell: or How to Judge a Painting” published in 1959. His sister Anita was the first woman oceanographer in the world. Stéphane Cara died in Nice (Provence) on May 16, 1962, at the age of 60. Source: Archives de France. Signed and dated in lower right corner. Medium: Oil on wood panel. Condition: Very good condition. Antique Vintage Pansy Flower Yard Long Oil Painting, Shabby Chic, Cottage
Antique yard long oil painting of pansies on canvas. I bought this in the 1980s and framed it contemporary. It has moved with me through many states and styles of homes and always fit in. The condition is good considering its age. I tried taking enough pictures of the most noticed holes, rips, scratches and marks, and if you want more just let me know. The canvas needs stretching. I can’t see the back as it has a paper backing, and I don’t remember if there are nails around the canvas, as that seems something others like to mention in their listings. I can’t find a signature and don’t remember if it might be under the frame. It measures about 39 inches x 10-1/4 inches in the frame. The frame has a few dings but largely is intact. Photos were taken with and without the flash; understand that monitor colors differ.
