So as to seal in the paint and protect your art piece from dust, you can put several coats of. Acrylic varnish on it with a sponge or paint brush. This product also comes in a spray can. Stretching the Painting Canvas. We strongly suggest that you watch a video on this step. Again, it’s not complicated. It is very straightforward. 1955 Orig MARGARET KEANE / ULBRICH Oil Canvas Painting Girl Big Cat Eye Glasses
1955 Orig MARGARET KEANE / ULBRICH Oil Canvas Painting Girl: Big Cat Eye Glasses. Up for sale is an original Margaret Keane oil on canvas painting from 1955 of a brilliantly geeky girl in big cat eye glasses, cut bangs and a puffy sleeved green dress with white lace trim. 1955 is the year the Tim Burton film BIG EYES about Margaret Keane begins. She left her husband that year, moved to San Francisco to try her luck as an independent professional artist and she met and married Walter Keane. Margaret’s name before marrying Keane was Ulbrich. There is a very limited number of paintings Margaret signed ULBRICH before marrying Keane which makes this stand out to collectors. This is a particularly terrific early painting because it dates to before she started doing the big eye subjects, yet with the large cat eye glasses, this painting is all about the girl’s big eyes just the same. Here’s my interesting story about this painting. I saw the name Ulbrich but did not recognize the name or know it was a work by Margaret Keane. I bought it because I loved it. Recently Tim Burton’s BIG EYES movie was playing on Netflix. I started watching the film and towards the beginning there’s a close-up of the signature of the painting Margaret is working on in 1955. It immediately hit me…. I stopped the film and ran to compare signatures with my painting. Then I jumped on the internet and confirmed it–my girl with the cat eye glasses signed ULBRICH is an original Margaret Keane painting from before she married Keane! I don’t want to part with it but for a good price I can’t justify keeping her for myself. I reached out to Margaret Keane via her gallery to see if she might remember the painting or who the subject was. The gallery graciously did contact Margaret and she responded that she remembered the painting was from right around the time she met Walter Keane but she didn’t remember who the girl was. Margaret’s daughter Jane was ruled out as a possibility because she was only 5 years old in 1955–too young to be the subject. The frame is likely original to the painting and measures 24″ X 28″. The painting is 15.5″ X 19.5″. The collar of her dress has a 1.25 long straight line repair as in the photo. The repair is effective but doesn’t appear to be a professional repair–I believe a professional could do a wonderful job with it. I’ve never shown the painting to anyone who has noticed this small flaw. I imagine you didn’t either before the close up photo. The protective brown paper on the back of the painting is still intact but is torn. This painting makes me smile every time I see it. Knowing it’s an original Margaret Keane makes the smile that much sweeter. Thank you for understanding.
