This is a gorgeous medium-large antique impressionistic Hudson River School oil painting created in the 1890’s by a very capable but unknown artist – in the right foreground of the painting, one sees a river running from the right to the left of the landscape & flowing by some enormous boulders rising up from the right bank of the river sharply hundreds of feet above the river bank into the blue sky above the boulders – but, most of the sky was created by the unknown artist using a palette of various shades of gray & white colors to depict a sky suggesting of possible rain storms in the near future. The artist has done a masterful job in showing depth in the painting using his impressionistic style to depict distant boulders & hills in a very vague manner as one would see them when staring off to a distant point of a landscape – using muted & subtle shades of white & gray allows the artist to depict the hills in the mid-background as being far away & shrouded in mist & low clouds – there is a building by the distant hills that was also created with subtle white & gray colors & has miniature dimensions, all of which helps to show range & distance in the painting. The bank of gray-white clouds in the background also create distance by the artist in having them physically meet the top of the hills as they would appear to a viewer if he were actually standing on a hill in the foreground & gazing off towards the distant horizon. This antique impressionistic oil painting has been professionally conserved in the recent past whereby the canvas has been cleaned of over a century of probable cigarette & fireplace smoke (there is NO odor) as well household dirt & dust, & has been re-varnished to protect the surface of the painting as well as to bring out the beautiful original colors that the artist created some 130 (+) years ago – approximately 80 years ago, the canvas was re-backed with another canvas to strengthen & stabilize the original canvas – the painting measures a generous 22″ x 17″ sight size, & is in very good condition for its antique age. The painting is greatly enhanced by its replaced silver painted wooden frame which has a very pleasant “rope turned” design – it is substantial in weight & size as it measures 25″ x 20″ & is a full inch thick – I believe that the frame was added to the painting when the painting was conserved.
