Description & Condition: James Angus Crichton American artist Up for sale is this large antique river landscape oil on canvas painting by James Crichton. It depicts a tranquil sweeping river with an overhanging tree at the bend in the river. There are finely painted grasses along the banks and it is signed and dated 1907 in lower right. It is in good condition with an old patch repair with professional inpainting in that area and some craquelure to the paint in sky area. It measures 37″ by 24″ and frame 44 1/2″by 33″. The frame has chips to the gesso on corners. Please view all the photos and if you have any questions please ask. For the past twelve years, I have been traveling in my Airstream trailer painting landscapes of this beautiful country of ours creating art that tries to capture a poetic mood. Please be patient with me as I work to paint, photograph, list for sale and package our little attempts at making the walls a better place to live (for our eyes). The smaller paintings are often studio or life studies and oil sketches and though they are pretty snazzy in their own right, they are not the same as the larger more developed easel paintings. That said, let me know if you’re interested in commissioning a larger version of this or any other painting. I’m glad to do it. Many of my paintings have thick paint and can take a while to cure completely. The thick passages may still be a bit soft. With a few weeks cure time the paint will stiffen and the new aroma of natural walnut oil will fade completely. Please be aware that my paintings are meant to be viewed FRAMED. As fantastical as they may be and as pleased as you might be with your winning of my unframed little masterpiece be aware that the magnitude of your ocular felicity will increase exponentially as soon as you see the painting framed. They are best viewed and enjoyed with a simple profile dark or gold leafed plein air or craftsman style frame like the one pictured. The colors, drawing and composition of the artwork will all stand out and come together in a most pleasing-to-the-eye fashion when once framed. Enjoyment of any given painting will increase greatly when viewed while FRAMED at eye level on any wall. I strongly suggest having a frame ready for its first viewing or… Drive the unopened package directly to your favorite frame shop without anyone ever seeing the painting in its naked state. I can make a painting to your size and design specifications… Or another version of your favorite scene of a W Hawkins original. Just send me a note requesting information about special order paintings and I will get back to you. I can make another version of any of my paintings you see here or on the the blog link below, on the canvas size that best fits your needs. This painting was made in the studio. I typically work from reference images such as past paintings, studies painted from life or photographs. READ ABOUT OUR GALLERY. HUDSON RIVER VALLEY LANDSCAPE PAINTING WITH FARM VIEWS. In oil on canvas, unsigned; 19th century Item # 906IQW05J. A finely painted scene in oil on canvas executed in the manner of the Hudson River Valley school, this vivid landscape depicts a sweeping view of the countryside. The scene is handled expertly with crisp brush strokes bringing to life the complex array of leaves throughout the trees and wealth of grasses lining the foreground. A lone figure sits on the bank of a still river, the calm waters reflecting impressionistic hints of the bank while horses graze in a distant pasture. The painting is housed in an early and likely original frame with partial remnants of an old oxidized label from Wilmurt & Co. Picture Frames of New York. It is a powerful and very finely executed work. 31 5/8″ H x 43 1/2″ W x 4 3/8″ D [frame]; 20″ H x 32 1/4 W [canvas]. Condition Report: Frame has a few spots of loss and areas of regilding. Canvas would benefit from being cleaned as varnish has yellowed slightly and old spots of inpainting have become more obvious to the eye; light craquelure throughout with specks of paint loss in a few spots. Under UV examination, inpainting visible in the sky above the pasture, around the extreme edges of the painting and a few minor areas of touch up in the foliage.
