1955 Orig MARGARET KEANE / ULBRICH Oil Canvas Painting Girl Big Cat Eye Glasses
1955 Orig MARGARET KEANE / ULBRICH Oil Canvas Painting Girl: Big Cat Eye Glasses. Up for sale is an original Margaret Keane oil on canvas painting from 1955 of a brilliantly geeky girl in big cat eye glasses, cut bangs and a puffy sleeved green dress with white lace trim. 1955 is the year the Tim Burton film BIG EYES about Margaret Keane begins. She left her husband that year, moved to San Francisco to try her luck as an independent professional artist and she met and married Walter Keane. Margaret’s name before marrying Keane was Ulbrich. There is a very limited number of paintings Margaret signed ULBRICH before marrying Keane which makes this stand out to collectors. This is a particularly terrific early painting because it dates to before she started doing the big eye subjects, yet with the large cat eye glasses, this painting is all about the girl’s big eyes just the same. Here’s my interesting story about this painting. I saw the name Ulbrich but did not recognize the name or know it was a work by Margaret Keane. I bought it because I loved it. Recently Tim Burton’s BIG EYES movie was playing on Netflix. I started watching the film and towards the beginning there’s a close-up of the signature of the painting Margaret is working on in 1955. It immediately hit me…. I stopped the film and ran to compare signatures with my painting. Then I jumped on the internet and confirmed it–my girl with the cat eye glasses signed ULBRICH is an original Margaret Keane painting from before she married Keane! I don’t want to part with it but for a good price I can’t justify keeping her for myself. I reached out to Margaret Keane via her gallery to see if she might remember the painting or who the subject was. The gallery graciously did contact Margaret and she responded that she remembered the painting was from right around the time she met Walter Keane but she didn’t remember who the girl was. Margaret’s daughter Jane was ruled out as a possibility because she was only 5 years old in 1955–too young to be the subject. The frame is likely original to the painting and measures 24″ X 28″. The painting is 15.5″ X 19.5″. The collar of her dress has a 1.25 long straight line repair as in the photo. The repair is effective but doesn’t appear to be a professional repair–I believe a professional could do a wonderful job with it. I’ve never shown the painting to anyone who has noticed this small flaw. I imagine you didn’t either before the close up photo. The protective brown paper on the back of the painting is still intact but is torn. This painting makes me smile every time I see it. Knowing it’s an original Margaret Keane makes the smile that much sweeter. Thank you for understanding. Fine Orig Utah Oil PaintingListed Artist Florence E WareMountain Desert Ranch
The crisp, bright, airy and colorful painting depicts a rural ranch or farm house with a dusting of snow, showing desert sagebrush and windswept tree, a rough, rocky yard, and lofty cloud-shrouded mountains in the distance. As a lover of the mountain desert this painting captures the essence of a time and place. Perhaps a viewer knows the location of this rustic, remote house and mountain view. Obscured writing on the paper backing (see photos) may reveal part of the paintings original title, ________ a Utah Farm. A graduate of the University of Utah at age 22, the artist went on to study painting at the Art Institute of Chicago, and taught painting at UUtah for 25 years. The majority of her paintings are retained in a private collection, so this may indeed be a rare find. 16 by 20 painting is mounted in a 19 3/4 by 23 3/4 frame. The final photo in this listing shows the painting before the repair, and is included only for comparison. Water stains and tears on the paper backing (see photos) do not affect the painting surface, which is in excellent condition. Frame shows minor wear. Enjoy your visit, and happy shopping! Famous Artist This MAY BE HIS BEST FARMYARD SCENE EVER. Please Note: We had this up months ago. Their loss is your gain, here it is again. Don’t let it get away from you this time. We expect this is going to fly. It is an original August Laux (1853 – 1921) oil on canvas painting depicting a delightful scene of a puppy bossing (or at least attempting to) chickens in a farmyard. The chickens look like they are giving as much as they are taking. We estimate this to be late 19th century. August Laux loved doing still lifes and these farmyard scenes with chickens in them, but we did not find another with a dog or puppy in it. (A 12″ x 16″ painting). Amazing how he captured the emotions of these expressive creatures. 13 1/4″ x 9 3/8″ for its sight size, framed approx. 20 1/4″ x 16 1/4″. WOW – GOOD LUCK!! Yes we are starting this one at 99 cents with no reserve so you too can jump in. Here is his bio from off AskArt: August Laux (1853 – 1921) August. Keep scrolling there are 17 pictures and. More description beneath the photos below! Laux was active/lived in New York / Germany. August Laux is known for trompe still life, animal, genre. Born in the Rhineland area of Germany, August Laux became noted for his richly colored, precisely rendered floral still lifes and genre scenes, although early in his career his reputation was for frescoes and decorative painting. His parents were French and relatives held high government positions in Strausburg. A cousin and one of his uncles were sculptors in Paris, and with exposure from childhood to persons creative in the arts, Laux followed this path. He emigrated to New York City with his parents in 1863 and began studying sculpture, but in 1867 switched to painting, enrolling in classes in the National Academy of Design. He first exhibited there in 1870, and three years later accepted a commission to paint the scenery for a private club in Manhattan. This mural received such acclaim that he became much sought after for frescoes and other decorations in public buildings as well as private homes of wealthy persons including financiers Jay Gould and Andrew Garvey. After 1880, he turned to still life and genre painting, which he continued until his death in Brooklyn in 1921. His work is in the Brooklyn Historical Society.
