Morris Shulman (1912-1978) Abstract Impressionist Oil Painting Monhegan View

He was born in Savanah, Georgia but spent most of his life in Manhatten. His art education took place at the Art Student’s League and the National Academy of Design. He studied with Hans Hofman in the late 40’s but did not go directly in the same direction as the abstract expressionist painters of that period. His style is painterly and appears abstract at first but details of the Monhegan landscape can definitely be seen in his artwork. Shulman is well-listed and his paintings can be found in many important collections including the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian, The Metropolitan Museum, the Carnegie Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and The Art Institute of Chicago. The original painting for sale is either casein or oil on a canvas sheet attached to a cardboard backing and probably dates from the 1950’s. It is signed “Mo Shulman” in pencil at the bottom right but it is extremely hard to photograph and even discern with the painting in hand. In the wood frame it measures 17″ x 25″. Primary Colors are blue, green, gray, rose and brown. The painting is untitled. In photo 12, it looks like the artist used graphite lines to sketch a boat. This is a serene painting that deserves a better home than my art storage closet.
