Stanley Spencer classic type oil painting on canvas signed S. Stanley
The painting signed by S. Stanley may be a relatively youthful work of the artist, who was almost exclusively fond of depicting the areas close to his village of Cookham. Stanley Spencer in all his artistic production has never officially depicted Windsor Castle, with the exception of a more mature work where he was represented in small size on the horizon. This is a significant anomaly for a habitual artist like Stanley Spencer who lived just 16 km away and who every day while studying in London walked a road that ran alongside the famous Castle. Furthermore, avoiding in all one’s career a worthy depiction of one of the greatest British symbols would not have made commercially logical sense for every successful English artist. During his career, Stanley Spencer has always also created “classic” works, updating them stylistically as a result of his own artistic evolution. This painting partly takes up a sort of French romanticism, which research shows to have been a style on which the painter focused his interest. The work measures about cm. 76.5 x 51 and its dimensions are typical of some of the artist’s works. The painting is in its original state and has never been restored. It needs cleaning and light restorations not performed in order not to compromise its originality. The painting is part of a pair of works created by the artist probably in the same period. The other work depicts a lake canal near Cookham, although there is the possibility that it refers to a watercourse right near Windsor Castle. Latest updates on signature research. Stanley Spencer unfortunately signed a few works in his life but in some there is the characteristic of two letters “S” close together with a dot in the middle. We have not yet found a direct example of this type of signature from the youth period, but for example in the painting Child in High Chair of 1943 in the lower right corner, the same characteristic is visible. In this work of 1943 it is possible to note that the initial “S” of the surname Spencer is larger than the “S” of the initial of the name. This apparently insignificant detail, in addition to the more structured graphics of the first “S” of the painting, would confirm that it is the initial of a surname and not the name. In all the works both on canvas and on paper signed by the artist, the initial of the name is always of a smaller size. Latest updates on dating research. From a research that has just been completed concerning a possible dating of the work, based on declared data, but almost never indicated directly by the artist, the work could have been made before 1926, the year in which “The Marrow Bed” was created. Has a compatible pictorial quality. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”. The seller is “sancott” and is located in this country: IT.
