This beautiful portrait depicts a young girl holding a peach, playing with a cat and a monkey in a background very reminiscent of English gardens of the eighteenth century. She is clearly a member of an aristocratic family as she is wearing a fur of ermine and an elaborate dress with a gold and pearl-inset belt, typical of Ottoman fashion at the time. The little lady is charming in the young naturalness. The peach for a monkey in her hand, says to us that she is kind and to care for the pets. Her face is serene… Soft facial features and swelling of the lips, impart a portrait of tenderness and warmth. Based on a deep analysis of the style of painting, color, etc. We are inclined that this painting nonetheless belongs to the brush of the French artist Antoine de Favray (1706 1798). Oil painting on canvas, size: 92 cm x 75 cm (36 in x 29.52 in). Painting was professionally restored and ready to hang. Please study good resolution images for the overall condition. Frame size: 111 cm x 95 cm x 6 cm (43.70 in x 37.40 in x 2.36 in) frame is not original (19th century) but well suited. Chevalier Antoine de Favray (1706 1798) was a French painter. He is known for his portraits of personalities of the Ottoman Empire, as well as paintings of Grand Masters of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Besides knights, bishops, members of the Maltese aristocracy and other notable acquaintances, like the members of the Marchesi family with whom he was in close contact, were the subjects among his vast repertoire in portraiture. He often painted portraits of famous aristocrats, as well as members of their families in rich Turkish dress. From his brush are known at least two examples of portraits of Pope Benedict XIV, made after the original by Pierre Subleyras, and the equestrian one of King Carlos II of Spain. In 1762 Antoine de Favray moved to Constantinople like several other European artist of his time did too, where he spent nine years. During his stay in Constantinople he was painting numerous genre scenes of the everyday life in Turkey under Louis XVI and he also depicted locals and foreign dignitaries. The works of this artist are presented in many famous museums of world and private collections. Louvre Museum (Paris, France). Augustinian Museum (Toulouse, France). Artist Biography: Jeff Love Born in 1961 into a farming family from Ohio, Jeff spent his early years with a pasture of sheep, acres of corn and a red prairie barn as his playgrounds. As Jeff watched his grandfather shepherd a flock of sheep or harvest a field of corn, a love for nature grew. Art was always of interest to Jeff and the two seemed to go together well. A move to Colorado during his early teen years brought about a new love to build his growing interest in art on § The Rocky Mountains. Excelling in art in school, a high school teacher recognized that Jeff needed to go farther and encouraged him to take college courses while in high school at an art school in Colorado Springs where he explored various mediums and styles. After high school, Jeff studied art in college in Kansas City, Kansas, furthering his skills which led to an award in watercolor and representation in a gallery show. After college, Jeff felt a call on his life to a career in ministry and has spent many fulfilling years helping others discover their unique giftedness and purpose in life. Ministry has taken Jeff to Colorado, Nebraska, West Texas, and Arizona, where he now lives. During these years, Jeff focused his continuing education in ministerial studies, painting mostly for enjoyment and as an outlet. Finally, in 2007, Jeff recognized that an important part of his own life-purpose was creating and painting. Jeff is a firm believer and has taught countless many that it is never too late to become the best that God intends you to be. Actively pursuing painting with the inspiration and encouragement of instruction from some of his favorite artists, Jeff’s medium of choice is oil in which he has dedicated himself to exploring the Arizona landscape both en plein air and in the studio. Jeff loves to teach, paint and study art, wander the wilderness looking for just the right light, and his paintings are often inspired from some remote mountain location in the high desert of Southern Arizona. DESCRIPTION / CONDITION / PROVENANCE. This is a well executed, very old, probably mid 19th century, oil on canvas painting, of a Spanish Cavalier and his horse in a stable/barn scene. Painting is mounted in we believe it’s original, ornate wood frame. Unfortunately we are unable to locate the artist signature on the piece. The condition of the painting and frame are a little rough, frame needs to be seemed back together at the corners, as you can see in the photos, and does have some wear and a few small nicks, expected with it’s age. The painting has craquelure throughout, as well as two old patches/repairs on back of the canvas, can not see from the front.
