Igned by the artist with one of his pseudonym H. This pseudonym is one of several pseudonyms used by the artist Hans Zatzka to circumvent the exclusionary contracts many 19th century art dealers and galleries forced their artists to sign. It was not unusual for popular artists to have contracts at various galleries under different names; this enabled them to offer their works in different venues without breaking any legally binding agreements. Zatzka studied from 1877 to 1882 at Vienna Art Academy by Christian Griepenkerl and Carl von Blaas. Beeing a student at the Academy, he was awarded with a Gold Füger-Medal. In modern times his paintings are very much thought after by collectors and institutions worldwide. Signed and dated 1886. Measurements: approximately: 31 1/2″ x 25″ (79 cm x 63 cm) painting dimensions. 110 cm x 95. The painting is in good antique condition! Carved wood frame has some minor losses and signs of age. Sharp dark crisp and clean! Slaughter was active/lived in California. William Slaughter is known for Texas landscape, floral view, figure. Slaughters are becoming so popular, that almost all Galleries are looking for them? Slaughter was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1923 and died in Dallas, Texas December 2003. His first call was to the ministry and after serving in the Air Force during WWII, he was ordained as a Lutheran pastor. This calling took him first to Lubbock, Texas, Mexico, and finally Dallas. It was during this ministry in Mexico that Mr. Slaughter began seriously to hear another call. Slaughter began painting and exhibiting at local art and craft shows after moving to Dallas. Slaughter first belonged to and exhibited with the Artists and Craftsmen’s Association of Dallas. In 1968, he was awarded first in landscape painting. In 1973, he was awarded first in still life painting. He was mostly self taught and combined innate ability and persistence to create many Texas landscapes, seemingly everyone’s favorite subject, in realist style.
